So back in October I picked up my 7-08 from Patriot Arms. It was easy conveying to Jered what I wanted out of this rifle. It had to be twisted to shoot the Hornady 162 Amax, and it needed to be throated so that I could seat them out long enough to get some powder in the case. I ordered a bbl from Broughton and sent it to Karl Feldcamp to have it spiral fluted (he did the bolt too). The Rem 700 SA was trued and the bbl threaded, chambered, and installed. We bedded the bbl'd action into a Manners composite stock and slapped the Badger detachable bottom metal underneath. Added Badger low rings and a 20MOA base and we were ready to go.

Since I was building this rifle as a hunting rig, I threw together a quick load to take to Kentucky. Went and shot it and it did pretty good, so that concluded stage 1 of the load development.

We have the Practical Marksman Challenge coming up so I wanted to work up a good load to use in the match and that might require a little more horsepower.

Ordered some Rem RP 7-08 brass from Midway because most of it will probably get left on the ground during the match. Now know that I don't think much of the quality of RP brass so I did a little prep work on it which consisted of:
1. trim to insure consistent length as several of my tools index off length
2. full length resize with Forester die to straighten up the necks
3. ream primer pocket
4. debur/chamfer inside and outside flash hole
5. VLD chamfer neck

And that's all I did.

Seated some primers and started throwing charges in .5gr increments. I took 35 rounds to the range in 5 round lots of each powder charge. Here's a pic of the best 2 groups. It's right where I suspected it to be. Not too bad for the junkiest brass available. All groups were under 1" and most hovered around .5" to .75".

Here's a photo of the rifle:

Those are great groups but I hope your bullet diameter is .284 and not .265. I have not gotten mine to to quite that good but it is doing great. What scope and what were you using for a rest. Also what velosity and which powder. Brock

The bullet diameter is .284 but it only punches a hole in the paper that is .265. Just imagine how much better the groups would be if I subtracted .284 from the outside measurement rather than .265 ;)

The scope is a NF 5.5x22x50 NP-R1 and I shot the groups off a bench with a bipod and rear bag. I am using H4350 and my powder charge is just a little under yours. I haven't shot it through the chronograph yet but will soon and I'll update with that info as soon as I get it.
